SMS Notification Service
Fist Bump Scores offers optional SMS (text message) notifications to keep golfers updated on their rounds, league activity, and account updates.
What Messages Are Sent
- Round scores and results
- League match results and standings
- Handicap updates and changes
- Commissioner announcements
- Round reminders
- Account and subscription updates
Message Frequency
Approximately 2–8 messages per week, depending on league activity and user preferences. Users control which categories of notifications they receive.
Costs
Message and data rates may apply. Fist Bump Scores does not charge for SMS notifications, but standard carrier messaging rates apply.
Opt-In Process
Users must take explicit action to opt in to SMS notifications. The process requires two steps:
Step 1: User enters their phone number in their Profile settings.
Step 2: User toggles the "Text Messages (SMS)" channel on, which opens a consent modal requiring them to click "I Agree — Opt In" before SMS is activated.
SMS is never enabled by default. The toggle is disabled and grayed out until a valid phone number is entered. No pre-checked boxes are used.

Consent Record & Audit Trail
Every opt-in and opt-out event is recorded in our database with the following fields:
- optedIn — true or false
- consentedAt — exact timestamp (milliseconds)
- consentMethod — how consent was given (e.g., "profile_toggle")
- phoneAtConsent — the phone number at time of action
- revokedAt — timestamp if user opts out
A complete smsConsentHistory array is maintained, preserving every opt-in and opt-out event for full audit compliance.
After opting in, the user's profile displays a confirmation badge showing the consent date, time, and phone number used.
Opt-Out Methods
Users can opt out of SMS notifications at any time through any of these methods:
- Reply STOP to any text message (handled automatically by Twilio)
- Toggle off the SMS channel in their Profile → Notifications settings
- Remove their phone number from their profile
- Contact support via the in-app contact form
Opt-out is processed immediately. A revocation record is stored in the audit trail.
